President Stegeman called the June 21st meeting to order. Bob Anderson presented the invocation followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Stegeman introduced Wilburn Rowden who spoke about his career with the Army Air Corps in World War II. He was trained as a radio operator on a B-17 and stationed in England. All the crew members were hoping to make 20 safe missions so they could be repatriated to the US. However, in March 1944 on about their 6th mission over Berlin, they were hit by fighter aircraft and forced to bail out over Germany. Rowden became a POW until the end of the war. During this time Rowden and other POWs endured a 500 mile march throughout Germany which lasted from February till April 1945. Wilburn said, although he endured many harsh experiences, he would always remember the acts of kindness and compassion among his comrades.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.
Bob Anderson, treasurer, reported $9,432.82 in the National Credit Union and $75.82 in the local Hawthorn bank.
Ned Diekroeger reported making a written request last week for a group meeting with 4th District Congressman Ike Skelton. The request suggested a time and place for the meeting. Written issues provided by our headquarters office were sent with our meeting request. Members from the 10 NARFE chapters in Congressional District 4 will be advised after arrangements are finalized so they can attend if possible. This activity was developed as our part of the effort being promoted by our headquarters office.
31st National Convention – Grand Rapids, MI – Aug 28-Sept 9, 2010 – Proxy form due August 13.
Recruitment – One new member signed. Stegeman still mailing informational material to possible members and will include the Chapter's Newsletter to about 130 persons. Low attendance at Chapter meetings was discussed at this time. Several ideas to improve attendance were explored.
Alzheimer Fund Raiser – It was unanimously approved the Chapter would not pursue a fund raiser this year.
The Chapter's picnic is planned for September 20. Bob Anderson will obtain the pavilion at Binder. Federation President Ron Peters and District 4 Officer Margaret Huebner have been invited.
Margaret Sachse won the 50/50 drawing.
The next meeting will be July 19 at noon at the American Legion Building.
